Brits Being Told To Get TIE Card Before October

The British are being told that they need to obtain their TIE cards before October

British expats living in Spain using the green residency document should get a TIE before October of this year.  Without a TIE Card, those who wish to enter Spain may have difficulty when the EU Entry/Exit system is implemented in October.

According to the British embassy in Madrid All non-EU travelers entering Spain or another EU country, will have to register details of their passport and biometrics unless they possess a valid uniform biometric residence card. Only a TIE is accepted by Spanish authorities and EU for British residents living in Spain. The green Residencia will not be accepted because it doesn’t meet the requirements of Annex 22 to the Schengen Borders Code.

As a consequence, Residencia holders who try to enter Spain (or any other Schengen country) may not be able to have their residency right recognised. Instead, they may be accused of being a tourist overstaying in the EU. They could be denied entry to the UK and deported. The Green Certificate holder may be required to return to UK until the appeal is resolved.

Residencia

After October 2025 the green residence document will not guarantee entry to Spain.

The TIE card will ensure entry to Spain

The Ambassador of His Majesty, Sir Alex Ellis, said:  “We are grateful to all the British people, community groups and charities who have helped us spread the word.  “However, there is still a small minority of British citizens who do not have the TIE. We will reach out to them and explain to them the importance of the TIE, and encourage them to obtain it by October in order to travel smoothly into Spain and Schengen.
