They described them as a well organized criminal gang which pounced on tourist in a coordinated way.

Guadalest’s old town was the scene of several robberies..

Each theft had the same routine involving a distraction technique which the Guardia called the ‘crutch method’.

An armed gang would steal wallets, phones or documents by covering part of the body or arm with a scarf, sweater, or jacket.

The Guardia increased surveillance and identified several people present on the day of the thefts.

Each detainee had a distinct role, such as acting as lookouts, selecting victims, distracting, and the subsequent escape.

After several thefts the crew fled from officers in a luxury vehicle that was waiting to pick them up.

It was intercepted on the CV-70 near Polop with almost €4,000 in various foreign currencies found inside as well as jewellery.
