Mijas will be hosting its 9th annual Ruta Ecuestre por la Playa, on Saturday 22nd March. This is a beloved tradition that celebrates Mijas’ deep-rooted equestrian history.
Organised by Mijas council and the Peña Caballista de Mijas, the event draws hundreds of riders and spectators, showcasing the cultural significance of horses in the Costa del Sol with over 2,300 registered steeds. More than just a pony ride, the event is a reaffirmation of the character of Andalucía.
The ride begins at 9:30am, in El Esparragal Park, near Mijas Golf. It continues through Mijas rural roads, before arriving on the beachfront of La Cala de Mijas around 12:30pm. Here, horses gallop against the Mediterranean shoreline, their hooves creating sand and waves. This is a stunning sight, combining natural beauty and timeless tradition. It’s also a photographer’s dream. All participants will enjoy a shared lunch at Parque Los Olivos.
Councillor Eloy Belmonte calls it ‘Mijas’ most important riding trail,’ noting its role in maintaining the town’s unique charm beyond borders. This event is a great example of how important tradition is to Mijas. It combines campo, the city and the sea in a spectacular display. Registration is required by March 19, 670 066 075 / 635 976 703. Places will fill quickly for this legendary outing.
Ruta ecuestre offers a day full of culture, beauty and connections. Its spectacular coastline and celebration of cultural and historical equestrian legacies will make it a memorable experience. This is a must-see for horse lovers, locals and visitors alike.
