The Costa del Sol has always had a rice tradition, but without the marketing and luck of Valencia.
If you are new to paella, there are plenty of tourist paellas, but once you have tried it, you won’t want to go back. Where on the Costa del Sol will you find rice with a Malaga twist?
One such place is Torremolinos’ iconic Don Canapé in Avenida del Lido, a recently reinvented fusion foodie heaven that presents tradition with a culinary twist.
To clarify for those who are yet to discover: In Spain they eat their rice at lunchtime. You’d be hard-pressed to find rice cooked in a paellera at night. However, at Don Canapé, they make an exception, and for the most reasonable of prices at that.
At Don Canapé, their signature ingredient is rice in its many forms. The spinach and anchovy or Arroz Caldoso Con Marisco (rice with seafood in its stock) are both delicious and highly flavoured. For those who don’t plan to kiss anyone for the rest of their day, the Black Rice, with Alioli, and Salsa Romesco are also delicious.
The restaurant was in Torremolinos for a long time, but a major update took place a few years ago. It has now been given a modern, fresh look and feel that its food deserved.
The prices are fair and reasonable, and a healthy walk along Torremolinos promenade is a great way to start and end the experience.
Don Canapé can be found at Avenida Lido, 20, 29620, Torremolinos, and bookings on weekends are recommended by calling 952 638 002.
