Councils on Spain’s Costa del Sol have begun urgent repairs of storm-damaged beaches and infrastructure to prepare for Semana Santa, the annual Semana Santa festival. Recent tempests eroded coastlines, damaged amenities and forced councils to work overtime in Marbella. Benalmadena. Torremolinos and Mijas.
Marbella beaches under repair
The following are some of the ways to get in touch with us MarbellaEmergency crews work six days a weeks from dawn until dusk in order to restore El Faro, and La Fontanilla, beaches whose widths were reduced to only three metres at some points due to severe erosion. Councillor Diego López announced sand redistribution using heavy machinery like high-lift loaders and specialised dumpers. The two-week project draws from local excess sand for sustainability, with follow-up planned for Playa de Nagüeles. The objective is to stabilize the shoreline, eliminate dangers near promenades and prepare for the holiday rush. Maybe the council will start to look at the groynes, which the public has been demanding for some time.
Benalmadena beaches need protection against storms
Benalmadena Juan Antonio Lara has called on the central Government to immediately build semi-submerged dike barriers along the coast. Storms have destroyed palm trees on Playa de Los Melilleros, exposing an old emissary. It has been removed to ensure safety. Lara says that while the town has invested in boardwalks, cleaning equipment and other improvements, council repairs alone cannot prevent recurring damage. She wants central government funded reinforcements.
Torremolinos needs to finish its water supply
Torremolinos is advancing its “water highway” project, a €13.6 million overhaul of ageing water supply lines between Benalmadena and the town. To minimise traffic disruption, the Avenida Alcalde Miguel Escalona Questada will have partial closures starting March 2. These will be paused before Easter. Acosol, the regional government of Andalucia and Acosol have funded an eight-month project that includes a new 6 km ductile iron pipe network and a regenerated irrigation water system to reduce potable demand.
Mijas coastline walkway washed again by the waves
The following are some of the ways to get in touch with us Mijas, repairs to a collapsed coastal walkway section at El Capricho begin next week under emergency contract to VGC Global for €223,000. The 60 day project includes dismantling of the wooden walkway and installing marine pilings. It also involves restoring escarpments that were damaged by Storm Marta on February 4. Rocas del Mare will also undergo minor fixes, including cleaning and painting by workers in preparation for Easter.
The frantic preparations show how much the region relies on clean beaches and paths. Officials have promised minimal downtime, with hotels expected to be packed and processions planned.
