Week-long blitz against drunk and drugged-up motorists on Spain’s Costa Blanca

Costa Blanca: Week-long campaign against drunken and drugged drivers

THE Guardia Civil started a seven-day campaign to catch drink drivers on Valencian Community highways.

The campaign, which focuses on Alicante Province, will also target drugged up motorists. It runs until Sunday.

Officers will stop traffic on the road during daylight and nighttime hours, with a focus on high-accident areas and highways.

Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of an accident up to 15-fold.

The campaign, which is promoted by the Directorate General of Traffic(DGT), aims to prevent accidents caused by substances that impair driving abilities.

During the month of June, 13071 breathalyzers were tested on Valencian highways. Of those results that were positive, 289 resulted with fines while 46 resulted with court proceedings.

It is also alarming that out of the 690 tests conducted for drug use, only 20% – or 209 – were positive.

Juan Antonio Nieves (the sub-delegate of the Government in Alicante) visited a local border checkpoint on a Monday.

He said that ‘alcohol and drugs are still behind too many traffic accidents’.

He stated that “our commitment to road safety” is firm and that these controls were an effective way to reduce dangerous behaviours and increase awareness among the citizens.

Nieves also added, “zero tolerance for alcohol and drugs should be the norm.”
