Costa Blanca couple arrested after locking dead body in room to claim pension

The Policia Nacional arrested an ALICANTE couple for living with a deceased man for two months or more in order to receive his pension.

The woman, aged 32 and the man, 28, were to appear at court on Thursday.

The deceased 74 year old man worked as a Policia Nacional.

He took the couple, their baby, son and nephew into his home at an unknown time.

It is not known what their relationship with the man was or when they began living together.

Police were contacted by relatives who said that their father would not answer the phone. They had no other way to contact him.

Officers conducted a wellness check, and discovered his body inside a locked room with its doorway blocked.

Investigators could not make a preliminary assessment of the cause of death due to an advanced state of decomposition.

An autopsy will determine whether the death was natural or violent.
