ORIHUELA launched its summer campaign against the pests that are increasing in sewers, especially cockroaches
Pests thrive in warmer temperatures, so the warmer weather can bring unwanted visitors.
Specialist firm Lokimica is executing the first phase of works on behalf of Orihuela’s health department.

Spraying in Orihuela City is beginning and will be finished by mid-June.
The teams will then repeat the operation on the Orihuela Costa.
Irene Celdran is the Orihuela health councillor. She said: “Prevention will help us avoid problems during the summer heat. That is why we have started work in advance on the sewerage system.”
“Our aim is to ensure the health of Orihuela residents and protect their public safety,” she said.
Celdran also appealed for residents to report any pest issues to the council so that it can ‘act as quickly as possible’.
If preventive action isn’t taken, species like the American Cockroach (Periplaneta Americana), which can have a population of up to two times in a month due to an increase in temperature, will be able reproduce much faster.
Cockroaches are not only annoying, but they can also spread pathogenic bacteria, such as salmonella, and cause dysentery.
According to figures from the council, 70% of all urban pest incidents in the summer are cockroaches.
Orihuela said in the summer of 2012 that the use of advanced treatments had allowed the council to reduce incidents by 40%.
Irene Celdran continued: “Included in the summer are periodic works, as well specific responses to incidents reported by residents.”
