Sweden launched the first initiative in the world to allow doctors to prescribe visits for physical and mental wellbeing.

Nature, culture and lifestyle: A prescription

A YouGov study commissioned by Visit Sweden found that nearly two thirds of people (63%) would spend more time outdoors if a doctor prescribed it. In the UK, 66% of patients said that they would be willing to follow a doctor’s prescription for nature, even though only 3% had received one.

“Nature and social settings have healing powers. Sweden is no exception,” Dr Stacy Beller Stryer said, Associate Medical Director of ParkRxAmerica. London GP Sir Sam Everington – Vice President of British Medical Association – added that he welcomed Sweden’s initiative, and hoped it would help break down organizational and institutional barriers, benefiting all the patients. The Swedish Prescription offers doctors research-backed activities.

Professor Yvonne Forsell, from Karolinska Institutet – one of the leading medical schools in the world – reviewed all of these activities. Sweden is positioning this initiative as a model of preventive health care that integrates tourism, culture, and nature.

Visit Sweden announced in a press release that patients can download a medical recommendation to support a request to their GP. This initiative is now available worldwide.
