Channel 5 announced that it will be developing Death in Benidorm. This six-part detective series is set in Spain’s most famous beach town. Death in Paradise is a clear influence on this series, which blends sun, suspense, and a little quirky humor.
Simon Delaney is the director of the series. He was previously known for Death in Paradise. The show revolves around Dennis Crown. A retired British detective, Crown has decided to leave the chaos and confusion of UK policing in order to open a bar in Benidorm. Dennis returns to crime-solving when he finds bodies of holidaymakers. Rosa, his barmaid, is a crime drama fanatic who joins him. Her encyclopaedic understanding of fictional investigations makes Rosa an unlikely, but valuable partner.
The official synopsis of the show says: “With Dennis’s experience in the real world and Rosa’s TV theories, they will unravel a new mystery each episode under the Spanish sun while dealing with the difficult cooperation from the local police.”
Original scripted material
Death in Benidorm is part of Channel 5’s growing slate original scripted contents. Sebastian Cardwell confirms that Death in Benidorm is one of the six new titles Paramount UK has developed. He described the line up as a combination of “brand new mysteries and thrillers” that will satisfy audiences’ desire for intelligent, escapist television.
Although casting details are still under wraps, and there is no set release date, the pedigree and popularity of the location have already got fans guessing. Expectations are high, given the success of Death In Paradise.
British productions
Benidorm has been featured in many British television productions. ITV’s popular comedy Benidorm lasted ten seasons and became a cult favorite for its depiction of sun-soaked mischief by expats.
Other parts of Spain have also featured heavily in British dramas — from Mad Dogs (filmed in Mallorca) to The Night Manager, with scenes shot along the Mediterranean coast. Spain’s combination of consistent sunshine, low-cost production and familiar cultural touchpoints makes it a desirable backdrop for UK television.
Channel 5 is encouraging viewers to stay tuned for any updates as fans await more information about Death in Benidorm. Fans of sun-drenched sleuthing will have to settle for long-running classics like Death in Paradise or more recent gems, such as Bookish starring Mark Gatiss in the role of a 1940s bookshop proprietor who solves crimes.
It’s a fact: murder is never on vacation.
