The Gunners had a relaxed second leg against PSV in the Netherlands. They rested several stars after their 1-1 draw with Old Trafford and still had enough firepower to win.
Arsenal’s dominant win over PSV secures Champions League quarter-final spot
Arsenal’s first-leg lead was a huge advantage when they arrived in Eindhoven. Oleksandrzinchenko, a former Tottenham player, scored an early goal that capped off his confident start. Ivan Perisic produced a skillful display to equalise PSV. Declan Rice’s powerful header snuffed any signs of a comeback, and pushed the final score to beyond reach. Jorginho made a mistake late in the match that allowed PSV a chance to tie the score. However, it didn’t matter in the end, as Arsenal won 9-3.
Real Madrid await in a classic Champions League quarter-final
Real Madrid’s match was more competitive than Arsenal’s. Carlo Ancelotti’s men had to win on penalties after Vinicius Junior missed from the penalty spot during normal time. Madrid’s Champions League pedigree, however, saw them through in the shootout—something Gunners fans will be wary of, especially given the memories of that dramatic 2016 final. The first leg of this quarter-final clash takes place at the Emirates on Tuesday, 8 April, before shifting to the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday, 16 April.
The key dates for the Champions League on the road to Munich
Before locking horns with Real, Arsenal faces Premier League fixtures against Chelsea, Fulham, and Everton—crucial matches in their own right. Arteta hopes to have Bukayo saka fully fit for April when Arsenal’s domestic and European ambitions will collide. If Arsenal defeats Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, they will face either Aston Villa or Paris Saint-Germain.
Munich is, of course the ultimate destination. The road will not be easy, as Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund are all still involved on the other side. Arsenal’s emphatic win over PSV is proof that they can compete with Europe’s best. Now that the quarterfinals are just weeks away, fans can start counting down. They believe this is the year the Gunners will go all the way.
