Castillo el Bil-Bil reopens in Benalmadena.

Benalmadena residents and tourists have a new reason to stroll along the coast. The iconic Castillo el Bil-Bil in the town has reopened following a major refurbishment.

Reopening ceremony and ribbon cutting

The new Tourist Information Office and the completely renovated complex were officially opened by representatives of the local authorities and the regional government on July 20, 2009. Mayor Juan Antonio Lara, Patricia Navarro and the regional delegate of the Junta de Andalucia were the leaders at the ceremony. Total funding reached over €940,000 through the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan (PSTD) to help modernise local services while protecting cherished historical heritage.

Take a look at the high-tech information world

The new tourist office is located in the adjacent entrance building. It offers tourists a way to explore the region interactively. Three new VR stations equipped with motion seats and headsets allow visitors to enjoy immersive digital tours in multiple languages.

As soon as guests enter, digital information screens greet them. At the entrance there is a four-metre-long LED display, and behind the main desk is another 86-inch-long screen. Integrated audio-visual systems are now installed throughout the complex to support guided tour, cultural exhibits, and civic event.

More space for history, food and culture lovers

The primary building has gained valuable space by moving administrative desks from the red castle to the newly-modernised entrance module. Benalmadena has a rich history, and its traditional cuisine is showcased in dedicated exhibitions.

Structural works were primarily focused on making restorations eco-friendly. Rooftop solar panels and improved climate control systems reduce energy usage. Expert repairs have been made to exterior masonry and wooden carpentry as well as iron grilles. The landmark is accessible to all visitors, thanks to the ramps and toilets that are adapted for people with disabilities.

The beautiful historic building is located directly on Avenida Antoni Machado (78), right off the promenade. It welcomes visitors Monday through Friday from 9am until 6pm and on Saturdays, from 9am till 3pm. The ground floor tourist areas, as well as the courtyard gardens and classic Moorish fountains are free to enter.
