Just launched in Torremolinos is the ‘La Casita de Nilo’, a 66-square-metre facility at the Los Pinares employment centre, a space dedicated to animal-assisted interventions through the programme ‘El rinconcito de Nilo y sus amigos’.
Aguas de Torremolinos funded the space and it was opened by local officials, as well as students from local schools. Around 600 people will benefit from the seven free programs offered by this scheme.
The facility’s goal is to bring together locals and animals through workshops and activities, bringing diverse groups closer together, such as elderly people, children and those with disabilities. These interactions aim to improve social integration, mental well-being and wellbeing, especially for those with special needs.
The council highlights the research which shows that companion animals such as dogs can improve mental and physical wellness.
The programme includes therapy sessions at residences for the elderly, the Hospital Marítimo’s mental health unit, schools, and social welfare programmes, along with support for employment centre users.
The Nilo Foundation has taken the lead in promoting education, therapy and other activities for bettering people’s well-being. The foundation promotes environmental education and teaches students the importance of pet ownership and canine training for animal welfare.
