Spain will be facing Denmark in Marbella at Puente Romano this weekend, without their most notable players: Carlos Alcaraz (new world number one) and Alejandro Davidovich (born in Malaga).
Alcaraz confirmed that he was not present shortly after claiming his sixth Grand Slam in New York, having won the US Open on Sunday.
In an interview with Cadena SER he said: “I feel bad but the tour was very demanding.” The demands on his body and mind have been high, and it would not be fair to the team if he were ranked number one without having properly trained for clay.
The 22-year old from Murcia said that his next appearance could be at the Laver Cup or ATP 500 in Beijing. Another factor in his decision was the switch to clay at Marbella, as the rest of the season will be played on hardcourts.
Davidovich also blamed tiredness for his early elimination at the US Open in a statement issued by the Spanish Tennis Federation. Despite being knocked out early from the US Open he said that the 2025 season was his busiest ever and criticised the ATP calendar in recent weeks.
In their place, Roberto Carballés, Jaume Munar and Pablo Carreño join Pedro Martínez in the Spanish squad. Marcel Granollers has been removed from the squad as well due to an injury.
Two singles matches will begin the tie on Saturday, 12.30pm. On Sunday at 11.30am, there will be a doubles game and at least two more singles matches.
