Calls to emergency services rose 500% in Andalucia during Spain’s blackout – despite authorities pleading with the public to avoid unnecessary calls – CSN News

DURING Monday’s nationwide blackout, the Emergency Coordination Center (112) received more than 6,000 calls from Andalucia, five times the number of normal days. 

The emergency center received 3,581 calls in the hour following 12pm.

Although the authorities told citizens that they should only call 112 in an emergency, the number of calls normaly quintupled.

Authorities stated that citizens had the ability to educate themselves using media and social networking sites, even though not many people were able get internet access.

112 has issued a series recommendations to the general public on how to better prepare for a blackout.

Keep food cold during long-term blackouts by having candles, battery-powered lights, emergency lighting, additional batteries for your mobile phone and some water bottles in the freezer.

Also, they said to disconnect all electrical appliances and keep a light on in the fridge to ensure that the cold stays inside. 

After the blackout the single emergency phone number for Europe urges people to check on the condition of food in their refrigerators and freeze-freezers.

Check that the food has not been exposed to temperatures higher than 4C for longer than 2 hours, or that its touch is warm.
