CalaPop Festival returns to bid farewell to summer

CalaPop Festival is back to say farewell to the summer

CalaPop 2020, a celebration of rock, garage, punk and power-pop will be returning to Mijas Costa on Saturday and Sunday, September 19-20.

The 15th edition of the festival began as Fuengirola Pop, in 2008, but was rebranded 2022. It will transform the Costa del Sol, a small, intimate celebration, for 400 fans of coolest sounds.

Held mostly at El Charcón Beach, with additional events at Bar Mala Vida and Discoteca Maxy, CalaPop promises a weekend of sharp guitars, infectious melodies, and non-stop dancing against a Mediterranean backdrop. The festival has featured more than 220 cult acts, including The Beach Boys, The Peawees and legendary DJs such as Juan de Pablos or Guille Milkyway. It is one of Spain’s best music events.

The lineup for this year is an exciting mix. Angela Hoodoo will bring outlaw country, Howlin’ Ramblers from Cadiz will deliver rockabilly at its highest level, Portugal’s The Pages will channel mod revival and London’s The Speedways are hailed as one of the top power-pop bands today. The Silver Beats pay tribute to The Beatles on Saturday, followed by Asturian rockers Pelazo and garage-soul master Ian Kay. The Peawees, from Italy, close the night with their rhythmic fury. The dance floor is kept alive by DJ sets that run all night.

CalaPop also offers literary talks. These include presentations of books such as Oh La La! Ronnie Lane, Adolfo and an exhibition of art, Alvaroscopio. This year’s poster was designed by illustrator Alvaro Ortega.

CalaPop, true to its origins, remains a force for goodness, with the proceeds going towards Mijas Costa Domestic Animal Shelter. CalaPop 2020 is the ideal way to end summer. It includes dancing, beer, sun and sea. Visit the website for more information and tickets. calapop.com.
