Billy Vigar, 21, a former Arsenal Academy player and footballer, tragically died after a severe head injury suffered during a game for Chichester City. The incident occurred on Saturday, September 20, during an Isthmian League Premier Division fixture against Wingate & Finchley.
Vigar, who was trying to stop the ball from leaving the field of play, collided with the concrete wall about 15 minutes into this game. The match was called off after he received immediate medical attention on the field. He was placed in a coma and airlifted by helicopter to a London-based hospital. Vigar, who had undergone surgery the previous day on September 23, succumbed to injuries on September 25. The football community was in shock.
Vigar started his career in football at Arsenal’s Hale End Academy, where he joined at 14 years old. In 2022, he signed a contract as a professional with the club. He also had loan spells in Eastbourne Borough and Derby County Under-21s. After leaving Arsenal, in 2024 he went to Hastings United, before moving on to Chichester City. He had played four times and scored a goal during the current season. His teammates and coaches spoke often of his commitment to training and willingness to mentor younger athletes, earning him respect on and off the field.
In the wake of his death tributes were paid by players and fans from all over football. Arsenal described Vigar’s determination as “ferociously determined” and expressed their deepest sorrow at his death. Chichester City rescheduled their match against Lewes in a show of respect. Vigar’s family released a statement expressing their devastation and gratitude for the outpouring of support, noting that he was deeply loved within the sport and had died doing what he loved most—playing football.
The tragedy has reignited discussions on player safety. This is especially true in relation to the proximity of structures near playing fields. Many clubs and league officials have reviewed their safety protocols. They are also calling for more protective measures in order to prevent similar incidents.
