Big Brother watches out for litter louts

Big Brother is on the lookout for litter-louts

Benalmadena has increased its efforts in combating illegal waste disposal by installing mobile surveillance camera at key littering spots starting this week.

Plan is to identify those violators and fine them for leaving their garbage bags outside the designated containers or abandoning their furniture at unauthorised times.

The council announced that this measure was being coordinated with the local Police in an effort to improve the service of waste collection. In addition to the cameras, community awareness campaigns are also being conducted regularly to promote responsible waste disposal.

Benalmadena has already implemented daily cleaning routes and a free service for furniture and bulky objects with a set schedule in each area. There are also two mobile clean-points that move around the neighbourhoods every week. The new containers are also marked with stickers that indicate the days of collection for bulky items within each zone.

In spite of all this, council members are concerned by the illegal dumping that disrupts town services, harms its image, and poses a fire hazard. He warned violators who were caught disposing waste outside of designated times and areas would face heavy fines.
