Better, faster Internet for Mijas Pueblo

Better, faster Internet for Mijas Pueblo

Mijas has started a plan for installing fibre-optic cable in areas that previously lacked the service. This includes Mijas Pueblo, and other missing parts of this municipality.

The plan aims to deal with the EU’s mandated ending of copper wiring networks that is due to end by the end May. This has left areas such as Mijas Pueblo, without adequate infrastructure. The project has two main phases.

To support the fibre rollout, the council first builds dedicated municipal telecom ducts in the entire municipality. The plan was approved by the Andalusian Government Regional Culture Department in Mijas Pueblo. This is a protected area. The permission, which was requested in January 2024 and initially given in April, stipulates that cabling must match façade colours, use underground ducts, and avoid aerial crossings to preserve the area’s aesthetic.

The second phase will eliminate the need for extra fees for telecom operators to use the ducts. It will also encourage quicker fibre installation and repair. One operator has already started its rollout today. The initiative aims to ensure all urban residents gain fibre-optic access, remove unsightly aerial cables on the sides of buildings, and clearance of  street poles to improve accessibility. This initiative not only upgrades the infrastructure but also responds long-standing demands from local residents to improve Internet.
