La Costa del Sol is more than just a beachside vacation this summer. Benalmadena Cable Car will extend its hours to 11pm starting in July, and until August 31. This allows visitors to enjoy a unique experience of stargazing at Monte Calamorro located over 800 meters above sea level.
The open-air planetarium, part of the “Las Noches del Teleférico” (cable car nights) programme, transforms the scenic summit into the best spot for exploring the cosmos.
For an additional €3, visitors boarding the cable car after 8pm can join guided astronomical sessions starting at 9.45pm. El Aula del Cielo is a science education initiative that organizes the sessions. These sessions provide an accessible and enjoyable journey through night sky. The sessions are a fun and engaging way to learn about constellations, planets and deep space objects. They include mythological stories and expert insights.
Monte Calamorro at the cable car endpoint is a natural observatory of Costa del Sol. Its altitude, and the minimal light pollution, make it one of its best. Clear summer skies in Malaga allow you to see the celestial wonders that are found in the northern hemisphere. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Coast and mountains.
The 2 646 metre journey, which includes a 636 metre climb, from Arroyo de la Miel up to Monte Calamorro takes around 15 minutes for four-person cars travelling at 5 meters per second. On clear days you can see the African coast and mountains from the ride. As you ascend, keep an eye out for Benalmadena’s mountain goats.
This summer the cable car trip is both a scenic adventure as well as a gateway into a cultural experience that combines nature, science, astronomy, in a unique setting. It’s a great opportunity to experience the cosmos from Malaga’s best vantage point.
