Benalmadena’s unique stargazing opportunities 800 metres up

This summer, La Costa del Sol offers more than just seaside frolics. Starting in July and running until August 31, the Benalmadena Cable Car extends its hours until 11pm, inviting visitors to a unique stargazing experience atop Monte Calamorro, over 800 metres above sea level.

The open-air planetarium, part of the “Las Noches del Teleférico” (cable car nights) programme, transforms the scenic summit into the best spot for exploring the cosmos.

For an additional €3, visitors boarding the cable car after 8pm can join guided astronomical sessions starting at 9.45pm. Organised by El Aula del Cielo, a science outreach initiative, the sessions offer an engaging and accessible journey through the night sky. Attendees can learn to identify constellations, stars, planets, and deep-space objects, full of mythological legends and other expert insights, making it ideal for all ages, both in English and Spanish.

Monte Calamorro, the cable car’s endpoint, is one of the Costa del Sol’s best natural observatories, thanks to its altitude and minimal light pollution. The clear Malaga summer skies provide excellent visibility of the northern hemisphere’s celestial wonders, complemented by breathtaking views of the Mediterranean coast and inland mountains.

The 2,646-metre journey from Arroyo de la Miel to Monte Calamorro, a 636-metre ascent, takes about 15 minutes in four-person cabins travelling at 5 metres per second. The ride offers panoramic vistas of the coast, mountains, and, on clear days, even the African shoreline. Also, look out for Benalmadena’s mountain goats as you rise.

This summer, the cable car ride doubles as both a scenic adventure and a gateway to a cultural experience blending nature, science, and astronomy in an unmatched setting. This is a wonderful chance to connect with the universe from one of Malaga’s most spectacular vantage points.

Prices vary depending on demand whether the ticket is for an adult or child. Adults are around €21 and reduced price tickets around €17. Booking can be done at the website telefericobenalmadena.com.
