Wedding drama as access to church blocked Credit: Dmitry Zvolskiy
The voicemail of a priest from Benalmadena went viral. He is critical of the mayor’s public works in the historic center during summer wedding season.
Father Jose Morales is a local priest who was clearly frustrated by the audio. It has been widely distributed on WhatsApp and social networks. He tells Mayor Juan Antonio Lara in the message that the ongoing construction has made it difficult for couples to get into the church. “You’ve destroyed my summer weddings,” says he. “Now, brides are forced to jump over rubble just to get married.”
The works include the renovation of pavements, underground wiring and drainage improvements around Plaza de España and several nearby streets. Father Jose says he never knew the full extent of this project. He claims that the church square has been completely dug up and cars are unable to pass through. Even the lift is often not working.
Both locals and business owners expressed concern. One restaurant owner stated that customers and suppliers are unable to access the area.
The priest said that despite the negative reaction, the voice message was meant to be in a familiar and private tone. He said he spoke freely with the Mayor but didn’t expect the audio to be shared online.
This issue has ignited a debate on communication, planning and timing for public works.
