Benalmadena Plaza transformed into a battlefield of muscle, spectacle and myth

Barbarian Muscle Festival, which took place this past weekend in Benalmadena, saw warriors in leather and fur clad with a tanned and greased-up pecs, competing to win trophies.

On August 8, this display of pure muscles once again brought bodybuilders and fitness competitions from all over the continent to Plaza de la Mezquita.

A costumed battle of strength

As part of the event’s identity, competitors donned barbarian-style costume and took to the stage in nine different categories. Bikini First Timers and Wellness Open were for women, while Men’s Physique First Timers and Bodybuilding First Timers and Classic Bodybuilding Open as well as Bodybuilding Master Open & Bodybuilding Open were for men.

The local councillors Alejandro Carretero, and Maria Luisa Robles were in the crowd to represent the local authority. Each category’s winners received replica Conan-styled swords. Meanwhile, the best poser of the event was presented with a trophy that resembled Thor’s hammer.

The stakes are real at a qualifying event

The festival was also an official Pro Qualifier of the PCA Physical Culture Association. This meant that winners were able to earn a real step towards professional status, rather than simply a trophy. The event was sponsored by GARVE Health Management, Etenon Fitness and Etenon.

The next round of competitions will be held in Madrid later this month, so athletes can keep busy throughout the rest of summer.

Local support and community spirit

The council has emphasized how important such events are to the community. Officials noted that having a festival on this scale puts Benalmadena at the forefront of visitors’ and competitors’ minds. Benalmadena’s town hall reflected on the event and thanked everyone involved. It congratulated “the organisation, participants, and everyone else who enjoyed this sports day.”
