One of the final pieces in the jigsaw of the Costa del Sol coastal walkway to be finished in Benalmadena

Benalmadena is the last piece of the puzzle of the Costa del Sol coast walkway.

Malaga Provincial Council has approved funding of over €300,000 The new section of the Senda Litoral coastline path will be located in Benalmadena and specifically along the scenic Playa de Carvajal.

The project aims to improve a 435 metre-long stretch of promenade running from the left hand side of popular chiringuito Kalifato up to the end of a stepped ramp which connects the Avenida del Sol to the beach, near the Carvajal lights. The project will enhance pedestrian access, fix existing dirt paths and upgrade infrastructure all while preserving the natural coastal ecosystem.

The funding is in the form a grant that goes directly to Benalmadena Council. This allows the local authority the ability to start contracting construction work immediately. The project was designed by Turismo y Planificación Costa del Sol, a company under the Provincial Council. The works include repairing 1,510 square metres of the existing dirt path – essential not only for walkers but also for emergency and beach cleaning vehicles – along with improvements to 292 square metres of the stepped ramp pavement and 364 square metres of the rock revetment (escollera). Also, 326 metres wooden fencing needs to be repaired.

Costa del Sol walkway almost complete

Francisco Salado, President of the Diputación de Malaga, said that the Senda Litoral (Costa del Sol coastal walkway) is now 90 per cent complete along the province’s coastline. Since 2016, the Provincial Council has invested €15.1 million in a total of 44 projects spanning 11 towns. It is hoped, one day, the “Senda Litoral” will reach from the western Costa del Sol all around the south and eastern coasts of Spain – an even bigger challenge for serious walkers like the Costa del Sol’s own George Nayda, who recently walked the entirety of the Costa del Sol coastline as a personal challenge in under 24 hours.

Playa de Carvajal’s new section will connect local residents and tourists to the iconic coastal corridor that already provides stunning views of the sea and encourages sustainable mobility on Costa del Sol. Once the contracting process has been completed, work is expected to start soon. This will add yet another functional and attractive link to Benalmadena’s beachfront.
