Discover Benalmadena town hall´s latest updates: Monowa butterfly park relaunches with a focus on nature and conservation, while €18.7M in council investment boosts local projects and community life.
Benalmadena’s Mariposario, a popular attraction in the city, has been given a new moniker and a renewed mission. The butterfly park, now called Monowa and officially relaunched by Mayor Juan Antonio Lara on November 7, celebrated the “new flight” of nature and biodiversity.
It’s not just a rebranding. Visitors can take guided tours in the breeding areas. There is also a new exhibit of pollinating bugs and an interactive space called “My Butterfly”.
Monowa derives from the Japanese concept mono no aware. This is about appreciating and noticing the beauty in the fleeting moments of life. The park hopes to inspire visitors to learn and appreciate nature by slowing down.
The Mariposario has become a popular attraction for locals as well as tourists. As Monowa it is focusing on conservation and scientific projects, funding them around the globe, including the protection of butterflies in Thailand, Costa Rica and Jamaica.
Monowa welcomes families, nature enthusiasts, and those who are curious about these tiny creatures. Explore the Costa del Sol and see exotic butterflies in flight. The interactive displays will help you to gain a greater appreciation of nature.

The money will also help local businesses affected by construction work in Santo Domingo and Plaza de España, and pay for plans to redevelop the town’s bullring. Officials claim that the investment will improve the lives of residents and tourists while boosting the local economy.
Council finance chief José Miguel Muriel said: “We are adding €20 million over the 2023 budget, which will have a real impact on the economic activity of our town. These measures create jobs, support local businesses, and keep Benalmádena an attractive place to live and visit.”
Funding will also be used to modernise sports facilities and make them more accessible for the public. Residents who are in need of direct assistance can receive it.
