Benalmadena approved an ambitious project that will install an 8.5-kilometre pipe along the coast strip to transport reclaimed sewage water to irrigate more palm trees.
The plan involves digging up all the coastal edge to lay the basis for a water-treatment plant that will be linked to green spaces. This is to avoid using precious drinking water to do non-consumption activities.
This plan is part of a larger project to update and repair the entire town’s drainage and water pipes. That’s why you might have seen digging everywhere.
Deputy Mayor Juan Olea hailed the pipeline as a ‘vital step’ towards sustainability, ensuring the coast’s greenery thrives without straining water resources. The reclaimed, safe water will irrigate the gardens and public spaces, providing an eco-friendly way to maintain Benalmadena’s popularity as a tourist attraction.
The costs are still unknown, but councillors anticipate that the project will get started quickly as soon as a contractor has been selected.
The pipeline will extend from the local treatment facility along the coast to strategic points, cutting through the drought-affected region. Olea said that the move was part of a broader adaptation to resource challenges and would bring long-term benefits to residents and tourists. Expect roadworks.
