World Alzheimer’s Day, events in Benalmadena

Benalmadena celebrates World Alzheimer’s Day

Benalmadena is preparing for World Alzheimer’s Day, which takes place every year on September 21. The city has compiled a list of events to commemorate the day.

Organised by the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias Patients (AFA Benalmadena) with support from the local council, this years activities will take place under the theme of “Igualando Derechos” (or, ‘Equalising Rights’ to raise awareness, support research, and stand in unity with families affected by this challenging condition.

The programme was presented at a press conference held at the Casa de la Cultura, attended by Áurea Peralta, the Councillor for Social Welfare, and Maricruz Azuaga, president of AFA Benalmadena. Both stressed the importance for institutions and communities to commit themselves in order to combat Alzheimer’s disease, which is a growing concern.

Concerts, performances, and commemorative actions are all part of the organizers’ efforts to make Alzheimer’s more relatable to the public.

Benalmadena will begin its campaign on September 21, when the city’s landmarks are lit in green to show solidarity with the victims. In the coming weeks, there will be a variety of events aimed at raising awareness, educating people, and fundraising.

The highlights of the celebrations are the informational booths placed throughout the town on the 26th of September, the Only Jazz charity jazz concert on the 27th of September at 9pm, at the Benalmadena Auditorium; the 11th Commemorative Events on the 7th of October at Casa de la Cultura; and finally, The Lion King musical, performed on the 18th of October at 8pm, in the Auditorium.

The council and AFA Benalmadena invite residents to take part in these events. They aim to not only shed light on an increasingly prevalent disease in society, but also pay tribute to the patients, caregivers and families who are faced with its challenges every day.
