Carlo Ancelotti’s team managed to win three crucial points in order to remain ahead of the LaLiga title race despite playing with 10 men for over half the match.
Bellingham’s red card: Is he facing a suspension of a considerable length?
The first half of the match turned bad for Madrid when Bellingham was involved in an heated exchange with a referee. The English midfielder may now be facing a suspension of four to twelve games, depending on the way officials classify Bellingham’s comments.
According to the Disciplinary Code of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, a direct offense can result in a more severe punishment. Bellingham could be banned from key league matches against Girona and Betis as well as a Copa del Rey semi-final match with Real Sociedad. If the incident is deemed less severe—a sign of disrespect rather than a direct insult—he could escape with a shorter, two- or three-match ban.
Madrid was already on edge, after a number of referee decisions went their way. This led to protests all over the pitch. Dani Carvajal, who was injured at the time, responded with a social media post that hinted dismissal would be inevitable. Davide Ancelotti, assistant coach of the team, had to calm his father after he was booked for protesting. Munuera Montero appeared set to confront him at halftime.
Mbappé scores early as ten-man Madrid fight for victory
Real Madrid took the lead in the 15th minute when Kylian Mbappé capitalised on a defensive error, neatly slotting home to put the visitors ahead. Vinícius Júnior also looked lively and could have extended the advantage, but the referee’s refusal to award a penalty for one of several contested incidents fuelled further frustration in the Madrid camp.
Ancelotti’s team switched to a defensive formation after Bellingham was sent off, determined to maintain their slim lead. Osasuna pressed hard, encouraged by the vocal El Sadar crowd, to take advantage of their numerical advantage. Andriy Lunin, the Madrid goalkeeper, held firm, while the Madrid defense held strong, resulting in a win that kept them at the top of LaLiga.
All eyes now turn to the disciplinary committee, whose final verdict on Bellingham’s suspension could have a huge influence on Real Madrid’s next few matches—both in the league and the cup.
