Barcelona records highest-ever June temperature – as investigation launched into death of female street cleaner, 51

BARCELONA registered its highest June temperature ever on Monday, as Spain continues baking in a scorching heatwave.

The Fabra Observatory – an astronomical observatory that overlooks Barcelona from an elevation of 415 metres above sea level – registered a high of 37.6C, beating the previous record of 37.3C set in June 2019.

Barcelona has recorded four of its twelve warmest days of June ever in 2025.

Barcelona’s centre has never seen temperatures fall below 20C during the entire month.

The city centre temperature never dropped below 25C during the eleven last nights of June. 

Barcelona City Council has launched an investigation following the death on Saturday of a street sweeper, during which the Catalan capital experienced temperatures exceeding 35C.

After her shift, the 51 year old woman collapsed in front of her family at home.

In a Monday morning statement, the council denied launching an investigation into claims made by FCC, the street cleaning company that was contracted, which claimed it had adhered to all heatwave safety protocols.

After being shown messages by a Spanish newspaper, officials made a U turn. El País The woman complained of feeling sick.

The woman sent a WhatsApp message saying: “Hello honey.” Sorry for not getting back to earlier. It was a bad afternoon. Not only because I had a mess on my hands, but also because I thought that I was about to die. I felt pains in my chest, arms and neck. I was on Campellans [a street near Barcelona cathedral].”
