Barcelona has installed two fixed speed cameras, one in each of the directions on the Ronda Litoral B-10 as part of an overall effort to make the road safer for all users.
New cameras have been installed at the kilometer point 16.1, near Zona Franca. They are monitoring traffic. Anyone caught driving over the 80km/h maximum speed limit will receive an automatic fine.
Officials from the city say that this is not a move to raise revenue but rather to tackle risky behavior in an area where there has been a disturbing accident history.
Why Ronda Litoral was targeted
The Ronda Litoral, a major artery in Barcelona, is used by thousands of commuters and delivery vehicles, as well as long-distance motorists who skirt the city center. The stretch is not without incidents related to speed.
According to Barcelona’s City Council, the installation of the cameras was the result of a joint review by Barcelona Mobility Department and Guardia Urbana. The data from accidents was analyzed to determine which sections of the road are most prone to collisions, especially those that are linked to excessive speeds.
In order to enforce the law consistently, one radar was installed for each direction.
Sources from the city say that this is not a one-off initiative, but part of a larger road safety strategy to reduce serious accidents and improve driving behaviour.
What are the new speed cameras?
These new cameras are fixed-point speed cameras. They measure the vehicle’s speed in a specific location, rather than taking an average speed over a long distance.
Automatically, any vehicle that exceeds the 80km/h mark will be detected and fines will be issued. There is no longer a grace period for drivers now that the cameras have been operational.
These installations are part of an updated contract for maintenance and modernisation for Barcelona’s network of speed control. In the same programme an older radar at the Ronda de Dalt B-20 is being replaced with a newer version of technology.
A wider push for safer streets
Barcelona has increased its enforcement of speed limits in recent years in order to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries. Speed cameras, traffic calm zones and tighter controls all became key tools in this effort.
The city council claims that consistent enforcement can help to prevent dangerous driving behaviors before accidents occur, especially on high-speed roads such as the ring road.
The message for motorists is clear: stay within the speed limit. These new cameras are hoped to reduce crashes, injuries and improve safety on one of Barcelona’s most heavily-used routes.
Barcelona is stepping up its efforts to improve road safety, and drivers using the Ronda Litoral should remain alert.
