AI can be viewed as either a threat or a promise to modern society. It all depends on your perspective. Technology is all around us. BCN Airport has opened a restaurant powered by AI, which is robotically efficient and aims to improve the customer’s experience.
What is an AI restaurant?
Say hello to SELF – a robotic restaurant that promises to revolutionise how we eat in public. SELF will offer a dining experience that is optimised, complete with AI and fresh food. This is sure to polarise Spanish travellers and citizens at the airport.
Sergio Rodriguez, the man in charge of Areas Iberia, who partnered up with SELF to establish this interesting addition to the airport, insisted that: “This project marks a milestone in food & beverage and travel retail, and reaffirms our entrepreneurial spirit, capacity for innovation and transformational vocation to lead new trends in the industry.”
How will SELF work as an AI restaurant?
Spanish engineering company IJRRobotica and organisation AEV have provided the technology for SELF, which is the first of its type. They are also partnering with brands such Coca-Cola or Mahou to bring a futuristic introduction into the food and beverage industry.
This new addition is hoped to pave the road for other restaurants to adopt AI technology into their operations.
SELF will be able to process six orders simultaneously with the help of a robotic arm. Customers will pay using a touchscreen, receive a code QR as a ticket and be informed via screen when their food is ready.
The AI technology used by SELF allows quicker decisions to take place, enhancing the speed and efficiency of service.
Will AI start to be used in other airports?
BCN airport Spain has been one of Europe’s travel hubs, with an increase in travelers over the last few years. AI could be the key to the future of tourism, not just for catering.
Customers can benefit from a tailored service, while restaurant organizers will also be able to optimise their procurement and better manage inventory.
We will have to wait and see if other countries in Europe or Spain adopt AI tech for their food establishments. But we can conclude that the new technology is sweeping the globe.
Who knows when the next industry to be automated is going to happen?
