You’ll be thrilled to hear what is about to take place in Valencia if you have ever had to wait for hours for your test results to arrive from one hospital or have to recite your medical history a hundred times. Valencia is launching a new digital health record that will revolutionize how doctors and their patients can access important information. Yes, this could really change the way you receive healthcare, whether you are a resident, an expat or a visitor.

Medical paperwork headaches are over!

We’re all honest: the frustration of dealing with lost or incomplete files and paperwork is one of many in any health system. But thanks to a whopping €89.5 million investment, Valencia’s public health service is about to make all that a thing of the past.
In October, the Valencia Oeste, including the General Hospital and Requena areas, will experience the new system for the first time. In the next three-year period, all hospitals and health centres in the Valencia Oeste region will be involved.

What does this mean to you? No matter where you go for care- A&E, your GP, a specialist clinic – doctors will instantly be able to see your full health history. You won’t have to explain your allergies every time you visit a nurse or worry that your hospital doesn’t know about the tests you performed in another city. There’s everything right where you need it.

The benefits of unified health records for patients and physicians

The new unified record for health is not only about convenience. Giving your doctors all the information needed to take care of you is what this record is about.

  • Doctors are able to instantly identify what tests, medicines, and treatments you’ve done.
  • It is possible to coordinate more effectively, so that your GP, cardiologist and physiotherapist can work together instead of in separate silos.
  • This should reduce the number of duplicate blood tests (goodbye repeat bloodwork!)It will also help to reduce waiting times.

It’s not only for professionals. Through a secure online portal, you’ll be able check your own records, making it easy to track appointments, monitor your care and take an active role in your health decisions.

Mixed reactions to digital health records rollout

It is a fact that no major change happens without some controversy. Some unions worry about the impact of the new system on primary care staffing, particularly as new management positions and roles are created. But health bosses say it’s all about giving everyone—doctors, nurses, admin—the recognition they deserve.

Practically, the new digital system is easier to use.

  • Grouping patients according to conditions You can get more specific care by focusing on certain conditions (such as heart disease, cancer or neurological problems).
  • Identify people at risk sooner. Using data analysis to prevent and early treat,
  • Secure online chat between doctors and patientsMaking life easier for those who can’t get to the surgery.

Plus, there’s a major bonus for taxpayers: it’s expected to save the region about €10 million a year on IT costs alone, making it one of the most cost-effective moves in years.

What is changing in the future of healthcare for Valencia patients?

In Valencia Oeste, the digital record system will be launched this fall. It will then gradually spread throughout the entire region over three years. If you’re a patient, you won’t have to do anything—your records will simply move to the new platform, ready for any health professional to access (with your permission, of course).

What if privacy is a concern? The Department of Health promises robust security, and that strict rules will be followed regarding who can view your data. Only your real care team members should have access.
