The group Animals in Marbella Sanctuary (AIMS) is set to lead a demonstration outside the Estepona bullring on Sunday, July 6, from 6.30pm to 8pm at Calle Matías Prats, 1.
The protest is against bullfighting. It condemns it as cruel and urges local authorities to oppose such events and stop funding them.
AIMS is on a roll after their recent publicity in Marbella. In 2024 the group launched on Change.org a petition against the reinstatement Bullfighting in Marbella. This petition managed to garner over 22,000 signatories in only three days. The group’s renewed campaign was even more successful this year, accumulating 52,139 signatures within just four days. The petition urges Marbella’s town hall denounce bullfighting.
The group focuses on the cruel treatment of bulls. It includes things that most people are unaware of such as drugging and beatings as well as sensory impairments. Also, the group highlights the suffering caused to horses who are often drugged or injured during the events. AIMS claims that bullfighting, while a traditional practice, is a form torture. This view was shared by historical figures such as Pope Pius V who condemned it in 1567.
The group wants to press Estepona authorities to stop bullfighting and position the town as an example of compassion and progress.
AIMS will be in Estepona’s bullring on Sunday, 7th July to advocate for an end to what they call a “cruel show” and a culturally more humane future.
