The Andalusian Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs, targeting infants under 6 months of age, will launch its third vaccination campaign against bronchiolitis Monday 22 September.
Following last year’s record coverage of 95,3 per cent that resulted in a reduction in hospitalisations of 80 per cent.
RSV is a major cause of infant bronchiolitis
According to the World Health Organization, the respiratory syncytial viral (RSV) causes bronchiolitis. This is a respiratory illness that affects infants by inflaming the airways. According to KidsHealthThe symptoms can start as a common cold, but they can progress to wheezing and severe breathing problems that may require hospitalisation.
RSV is most prevalent in the fall and winter months. Babies under six months of age, premature babies, and children who have chronic illnesses are at greatest risk.
Who will receive vaccination in Andalucia
Parents of babies born after April 1, 2025 are being contacted to schedule appointments. Babies born between September 22, 202025 and March 31, 2026 will receive vaccinations in the maternity wards prior to discharge.
Additional immunization will be available to:
- Babies born under 35 weeks (under 1 year)
- Children with chronic diseases under the age of two
For the 2025–2026 campaign, 73,000 doses of nirsevimab have been purchased with a €15.8 million budget.
Andalucia began RSV vaccination in 2023. In the 2024–2025 season, more than 55,000 infants were vaccinated, achieving 95.3 per cent coverage. As a result, bronchiolitis-related hospital admissions in children fell by around 2,000 cases, an 80 per cent reduction compared to previous years.
Officials from the Department of Health stress that this vaccine is safe and effective at preventing serious illnesses. Parents are encouraged to accept the invitation for immunisation to protect their babies during the high-risk season of winter.
The importance of the bronchiolitis vaccination for expats living in Andalucia
The campaign provides access to one the most advanced RSV preventive programmes in Europe for expat families with young children living in the area. The campaign ensures that infants are protected as early as possible, reducing hospitalization risks and relieving pressures both on families and the Spanish health system.
