Andalucía hits nearly 400k foreign workers contributing to Spain’s social security system

Spain’s social security system registered 398,638 foreign workers in Andalucía in February, adding another 32,109 workers over the last 12 months, representing an average year-on-year increase of 8.76 per cent. The increase on a month-to-month basis was 2.11 percent (or 8,227 workers more than in January), as reported by the Spanish ministry responsible for social security and other matters.

According to these statistics, 58.4 percent are men (232 995) and 41.55 percent are women (165.642). According to a government announcement, Morocco, an EU country that is not part of the EU, and Romania are the two countries from which the most workers come.

When comparing the gender breakdown of country of origin, 71.5 % of men and 68 % of women (112,799) hail from outside the European Union. Malaga, with 121.126 foreign workers registered, is the largest province in terms of number. This represents a 10.7 % increase from a year before, which is 11,703 extra workers. Almeria is the next province, after Costa del Sol, with 86.392, an increase of 2.24 percent (1,897 registered workers).

Jaen, with a growth of 40.4 percent compared to February 20,25, added 5,483 workers, bringing the total to 19,054.

Central government also indicated that, in February, Andalucía accounted for 12.9 per cent of the national total of foreign workers registered with social security. Total national workers reached 3,076,841 after 202,443 newcomers in the past 12 months. The difference between the year-on-year figures is more than 7%.

Since February 2022, the total number of foreign workers in Spain has increased from 800,000 to over 1,000,00. Since the introduction of Spain’s Labour Reform, 43.7% of all new jobs have been filled by foreign workers.
