Andalucia hit by highest RED ALERT weather warning TODAY: Temperatures to max out at 44C in western regions

Andalucia hits by highest RED ALERT Weather Warning TODAY: Temperature to top out at 44C

The brutal heatwave in Spain has caused the highest level of red weather warnings to be issued across western Andalucia, with temperatures expected to reach 44C today in some parts of Sevilla province and Cordoba.

Both provinces have warned their countrysides to prepare for extreme temperatures. The Huelva Coast is also on red alert if the temperature rises above 42C.

Authorities have warned people to be cautious today after the red alert issued by Spain’s Aemet meteorological agency.

Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, choose light meals, avoid exercising in the midday heat, and stay indoors.

Sevilla’s town hall issued a public health warning to residents

Sevilla’s town hall is urging dog owners to get out and walk their pets early. They have also given tips on lowering blinds or checking the ventilation of appliances.

Costa del Sol is set for a milder 27C peak, while Cadiz lingers around 28C and Granada nudges 30C – still warm enough to keep the sunscreen handy.

The warnings are coming after Monday’s scorching heat. El Granado, in Huelva, recorded 44.3C, and several locations across Badajoz and Sevilla, Teruel, and Huelva broke the 43-44C threshold.

According to the Meteorologists, today’s conditions will be even worse.

The interior of Guipúzcoa and Bizkaia in the Basque Country are also under red alerts for temperatures exceeding 40C – unusual for the typically cooler northern regions.

Spain’s interior is awash with temperatures that regularly reach 37-39C. Valleys of the Ebro and Tagus rivers, as well as Guadiana, can even exceed 40-42C.

Canary Islands can’t escape the scorching heat, with temperatures reaching 36-38C on the middle level and possibly 40C in Gran Canaria’s southern interior.

Relief could be temporary. Whilst Wednesday should bring a welcomed drop in temperatures as an Atlantic weather system approaches – particularly benefiting northern regions like Galicia, Asturias and the Basque Country – the respite looks set to be short-lived.

The temperatures will rise again from Thursday, which could extend the heatwave into the weekend and the rest of the week.

The new heat surge is being driven by a cold pocket at altitude to the west of Peninsula, which pushes northwards warm air from Africa.

The nighttime is not a haven for the heat-weary. Millions will find it difficult to sleep as the minimum temperatures remain stubbornly over 23-25C in vast areas of Extremadura and Madrid, Castilla La Mancha, Andalucia Murcia, Valencia, Andalucia.

Aemet has issued a red alert for parts of Sevilla province and the Huelva Coast

Conditions will keep temperatures 8-12C over seasonal averages for much of Spain’s inland.

Experts warn that if a brief cooling on Wednesday breaks the technical criteria for a heatwave, then Thursday’s return of extreme heat can quickly establish the dangerous pattern.

The country is facing one of the worst heatwaves it has experienced in recent history.
