Andalucia residents are experiencing a large influx in giant moths. The large insects, which are mostly found in urban areas, have appeared suddenly. They can be found in homes, bedrooms, and kitchens.

Experts believe that this invasion is the result of a combination unusual weather patterns. The combination of heavy rains in late April and unusually warm temperatures in May created the perfect conditions for this moth to reproduce quickly. Warm winds from North Africa also helped to bring large numbers of these moths into southern Spain.

Although their size may be alarming to some, the health authorities assure residents that they are not dangerous. These moths do not bite or sting. They also don’t spread disease. Their presence inside can be annoying, however, because some moths are capable of damaging fabrics or contaminating food.

Experts suggest placing bay, lavender, or mint leaves in drawers and wardrobes to repel moths naturally. Diffusers that use essential oils can also help to repel these unwanted guests. Sealing foods tightly and keeping the living area clean will reduce their appeal.

Although annoying, this moth infestation is expected to be brief. They will disappear almost as fast as they appear because their natural life cycle lasts only a few weeks. Simple measures to prevent the spread of the fungus can be taken in the meantime.

Authorities remind the public that this unwelcome phenomenon is not dangerous.
