Amazon has announced a massive £40 billion (€47.2 billion) According to reports, there will be a massive investment in the UK for the next three-year period, aiming at opening four new warehouses, and creating thousands more jobs throughout the country.

The online retail giant has confirmed that two new fulfilment centers will be opened in the East Midlands region by 2027. The exact location of these future sites has not been revealed.

Amazon’s £40bn plan isn’t just about warehouses. The company will:

  • Two new buildings are added to the Shoreditch headquarters in East London
  • Upgrade delivery stations, transport infrastructure
  • Bray Film Studios, Berkshire: Invest in the future
  • Prime streaming, drones, and data centers are all being upgraded.
  • Employee wages and benefits should be increased

Much of the funding includes the £8bn (€9.38 billion) already earmarked for UK data centres in 2024.

Major win for UK economy

The Prime Minister, Sir Keir starmer, welcomed the news and called it “a massive show of confidence in UK as the most attractive place for business.”

“It means thousands of new jobs – real opportunities for people in every corner of the country to build careers, learn new skills, and support their families,” said Starmer, as quoted by Sky News.

Rachel Reeves said that the investment was also a powerful endorsement of Britain’s economic strength.

Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy highlighted the company’s focus on expanding beyond the capital, “When Amazon invests, it’s not only in London and the South East – we’re bringing innovation and job creation to communities throughout England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.”

The company already employs 75,000 people across the UK making it the largest private employer in the country.

Amazon is still under fire despite its massive investment. Regulators and unions have long raised concerns about conditions in Amazon’s warehouses – claims which the company denies. This month, in France, Amazon was fined by Watchdog €32 million for using a secret algorithm to monitor staff performance to the nearest second.
