Latest protest about high property prices caused by mass tourism in Alicante

Alicante protests against high property prices due to mass tourism

Alicante City saw a protest against mass tourism by about 1,000 people last Friday.

Estimates from the Government Delegation are much lower than similar protests in Spain over the past 18 months.

It was the third demonstration in a year organised by the ‘Alicante- Where are you going?’ platform.

LAST FRIDAY MARCH

Participants called for cheaper housing, as it is expensive to rent and buy holiday homes.

Group spokesperson, Jordi Arnes, said that ‘mass tourism is a very big problem in Alicante that is affecting many districts putting pressure on house prices’.

Some banners were in English including one stating that ‘refugees were welcome but tourists should go home’.

El Postiguet is the beach where the march concluded.

The platform has warned that Alicante is losing its residential and ‘welcoming’ character.

The report called for immediate measures to stop prioritising monetary profits over the wellbeing of residents.

A manifesto was read, which called on politicians to protect the city districts of Alicante and guarantee their right to live there.

Alicante City Council extended its two-year ban on issuing new licenses for tourist apartments to include blocks.

The suspension also applies to new licences issued for properties such as guesthouses and tourist hostels.

Valencian Association of Apartments and Tourist Accommodation (APTUR CV) is challenging the apartment ban in court.

The group says the initial moratorium ‘totally lacks justification’.

Silvia Blasco said, “There are no areas in Alicante where the residential housing market is stressed.”

Blasco added that tourism brought €220 million of income into the city last year.
