Alhaurin el Grande is getting ready for its annual May Fair from Wednesday, May 27, to Sunday, May 31, 2019. The May Fair will be a memorable event this year, with a new extended programme.
Beautiful young faces to represent the celebrations
This year’s poster features the charming face of Maria Galiano Benitez. She is a five-year old girl from the locality, and her image will represent the spirit behind the festivities. Alhaurin el Grande Town Hall revealed both the poster as well as the entire programme during a presentation that was held on the theater terrace.
Opening night, Children’s Day and the opening ceremony
Wednesday is Children’s Day. The colourful Grand Fair procession begins at 7.30pm. It is led by the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth Band and the Manuel Amador Musical Association and Holy True Cross Music and Cultural Group. At 9.30pm the official inauguration and lighting ceremony will take place, followed by a Miss & Mister Gala at 10pm. The Youth Tent runs from 11pm until 4am.
Senior Citizens’ Day and Live Music
The traditional senior citizens lunch, organized by A Yes for Life and United Against Cancer begins at 1pm on Thursday at the Sports Centre. Live entertainment will be provided, as well as the election of our King and queen of our elders. El Callejon, Alejados, and DJ Vicente80s will all be performing in the evening.
Local Holiday and Fair in Full Swing
The Friday holiday is observed locally. A Rociera Mass will take place at noon on Friday in Plaza Baja, and the daytime festival runs from 1pm-7pm. It includes live performances by Francis Leon and Puroindie as well as dance performances. The evening fun begins at 7pm with Rocio, La Lubera and Juan Jesus El Manta. Duo Siroko Flamenpop and Son Dkanela will also be performing.
Headliners, dance and horses
On Saturday, dance academies will perform on the plazas of the town center starting at 2pm. Frasco de Pruna performs at 7pm. A horse tack contest begins at 8pm. Ramses takes the stage from 10pm. Mesalla will headline at 11pm. El Sebas de la Calle will follow at 1am.
Extended finale and drone spectacle
On Sunday, the fair will run from 1pm-3am. Mas que Amigos will open the Youth Tent for the first day at 8pm. Son del Puerto will perform at 3pm. Francis Leon will perform at 5pm. And Somos del Sur will be performing at 10pm. Manuel Ponce and Luis Benítez perform at 5pm ahead of a full equestrian spectacular from 8pm featuring doma vaquera, garrocha displays, Sevillanas on horseback, and high school riding. A spectacular drone show at 11.45pm closes the fair.
Information on food, drinks and practical matters
Local clubs and brotherhoods run their own bars and food stands throughout the week on the fairgrounds and in the town centre. The daily period of silence runs from 7pm-8.30pm. There are dedicated anti-harassment points, animal welfare points, children’s playgrounds, and Saturdays will see a boosted bus service. ATV will broadcast a fair-specific programme over the five days.
The feria offers a wide range of activities and attractions for all ages.
