E-scooter crackdown in Alhaurin

Alhaurin crackdown on E-scooters

Alhaurin el Grande council approved a local traffic bylaw that replaces an outdated 2001 regulation regarding electric scooters.

Due to the growing popularity of electric scooters as well as their increased accidents, the updated rules are effective immediately.

In addition, e-scooter drivers will be required to carry third-party liability coverage starting in January 2026. Police will increase traffic checks in October and enforce harsher penalties if non-compliance is found. Pablo Rengel said Alhaurin el Grande has been one of few towns to have clear e Scooter regulations. “We ask for residents’ cooperation and to be aware that, despite not having a motor, escooters are required to follow the same rules of traffic as other vehicles,” said Rengel.

The town launched a phased approach, beginning with education talks in schools and moving on to public information campaigns, as well as a future traffic enforcement program with roadblocks at certain intersections. The road safety campaign aimed at schools aims to teach children the importance of traffic rules. Mayor Anthony Bermudez warned of the dangers of irresponsible use of e-scooters, citing 14 deaths in the United States by 2024. “These vehicles are just like any other vehicle, and have obligations and traffic laws.” “These new rules improve safety for drivers and pedestrians,” he said.

With this clampdown, Alhaurín el Grande takes a significant step toward cracking down on dangerous scooter use, putting the safety of all road users and pedestrians first.
