Alert for holidaymakers in Spain’s Canary Islands: Rare red weather warning issued for extreme heat – with temperatures surpassing 40C

Authorities in Spain have issued an unusual red weather alert to Canary Islands due to a heatwave that is bringing soaring temperatures.

The state weather agency AEMET has issued a red warning for excessive heat on the islands of Tenerife Lanzarote Fuerteventura Gran Canaria with temperatures expected to exceed 40C.

According to some agencies, mercury temperatures could reach 45C or even higher in certain zones.

The temperatures are unlikely to fall below 30C, so it could also be a restless night.

A high of 43.6C on Saturday was recorded by an AEMET station in Tasarte in Gran Canaria. Unofficially, a temperature of 43.8C in Tuineje in Fuerteventura was also recorded.

Under official advice, people should ‘limit time spent outdoors and avoid intense or prolonged outdoor physical activity during the extreme heat event’, with the Canary Islands’ public health director warning that children under four, pregnant women, adults over 65 and anyone with respiratory or cardiovascular problems are at particular risk.

The orange weather alert has been issued for La Gomera and El Hierro, the islands to the west of La Palma. Temperatures are expected at 38C.

AEMET also issued a warning for poor visibility in Gran Canaria and Lanzarote as a dust bank from the Sahara Desert is making its way to these islands.
