Age Concern Fuengirola Mijas and Benalmadena is preparing to open their brand new Community Hub in February of 2026.
Construction of the facility for which it was built is moving rapidly. Volunteers and committee members are getting more excited. The exact location will be revealed nearer the opening date. But the charity confirmed that the hub would be fully accessible. It will have ramp access, toilets for disabled people, and an upper-floor lift. Features designed to remove obstacles for older people or those with mobility problems.
Age Concern’s new initiatives for 2026 are embraced by all employees
Former volunteers from second-hand shops met the Age Concern leadership team in Fuengirola for a brainstorming session. Over 20 ex-volunteers shared ideas about services, activities and support programmes to make the hub an essential lifeline for expatriates and older people without local family connections. The suggestions ranged from regular exercise classes and coffee mornings to specialist advice sessions about Spanish residency, healthcare rights, and bereavement.
The new centre includes a reception area for visitors, an activity room that can accommodate up to 60 people and a lounge where individuals can chat privately, as well as a fully-equipped kitchen and office space dedicated for the charity’s befriending coordinator and social worker. The reopening on the ground level of a second hand shop, which will offer quality donated items at affordable prices and generate funds to support the charity’s services for free, is a key feature.
Companionship and assistance – Age Concern bouncing back
Age Concern provides similar services in Fuengirola Mijas and Benalmadena. Once opened, the centre’s hours will be Monday through Friday from 10am until 2pm. As volunteer numbers increase, there are plans to extend evening and weekend activities.
In the meantime, the charity is reestablishing a strong and visible presence in Mijas Pueblo through the return of regular meetings for volunteers. Starting immediately, gatherings will take place on the first and third Tuesday of every month from 12 noon to 2pm at Bodeguita El Tejo on Avenida de México. The popular venue generously offered to let residents use its private upstairs meeting room at no charge.
Age Concern is open to all.
The meetings are open to all foreigners, regardless of their nationality.
Mike Walsh, President of the school, thanked all for their continued support. He added that, “After the challenges posed by the pandemic as well as the loss of our former building, this feels like a whole new chapter.” The room was buzzing with energy, and we are excited to welcome our entire community in February.
Age Concern is strengthening its network in Fuengirola and Benalmadena to a new level. The hub will open within months and the volunteer teams are growing again. Age Concern relies solely on donations and fundraisers. No government funding is provided.
