A public park on the border of Barcelona was forced to close as African swine virus spreads – raising new fears for Spain’s lucrative pork sector

Collserola, a park located on the outskirts Barcelona was closed due to the discovery of an infected dead boar. 

The discovery in the north west suburb of Barcelona marks a first confirmed case of African Swine Fever within the city. 

The authorities have had to close down the park, as well as ban all activities such a walking dogs, hiking, running and cycling to prevent the virus spreading through humans, vehicles or animals.

Prior to this, the park was only accessible overnight.

Barcelona authorities plan to set up traps in order to capture as many wild boars possible over the coming weeks.

Catalunya Minister of Agriculture, Oscar Ordeig, said, ‘we are going to be very forceful in capturing boars’. 

Since the outbreak in November 2025 of the latest virus wave, authorities have found more than 220 infected boars.

African swine virus does not infect people, but is extremely lethal to pigs and boars. This can cause severe damage to the pork industry. 

Although no pigs farms were infected by the disease, export restrictions have forced Catalan pork onto about 15% of international markets. Pig farms in the area are now forced to reduce their production by approximately 33%.
