Smoke spread from the seventh-floor wing to the six-floor at 6pm.

The mattress was intentionally set on fire, but due to its fire-resistance it did not cause any flames. Instead, a plume of toxic smoke was produced.

Eight hospital staff members were treated by the smoke for their effects.

Residents called the emergency services when they noticed the thick black plume.

According to the Ministry of Health, 80 patients had their rooms evacuated by hospital staff and relocated.

Valencian president, Carlos Mazon, went to La Fe and said he ‘deeply’ regretted the death of the woman.

He said that mental health professionals were helping her family.

Mazon added that the fire was detected ‘very quickly’ and all safety protocols were put into action.
