A horrific car crash on Thursday evening turned a happy seaside promenade scene into one of devastation when a car travelling at high-speed crashed into the terrace of Pizzería Don Santiago on Fuengirola’s Paseo Marítimo, opposite Carvajal Beach.
The incident occurred at 9.35pm and left two dead, as well as several others injured, including three who are in a critical condition.
Witnesses described chaos as the car roared down the promenade at a speed well over the limit. One passerby said she heard the vehicle ‘burning rubber’ before it veered off a curve, struck a lamppost, and ploughed into the pizzeria’s terrace. The impact destroyed several tables, where diners had been seated. The car then rebounded onto the road before colliding with another vehicle.
One of the victims was a pedestrian who may have been struck as he walked down the street and caught in the collision between cars. According to witnesses, the columns around the terrace were able to absorb some of the impact force from the car.
In the aftermath, shattered glass, shattered table tops, and a broken wheel of the wrecked car were all visible. The vehicle remained on the highway well past midnight. Local and National Police cordoned of the area to investigate the cause. The vehicle is described as a mangled wreck, which gives an idea of how violent the collision was.
Fuengirola’s local police confirmed the fatalities but has yet to release details on the identity of the victims and the driver’s conditions.
