The incident happened in the area of the Madrid Playa chiringuito just as their daily service was about begin. The professionals were able to respond to the emergency thanks to a local who raised the alarm and called the emergency number 112.

Two Norwegians from the same household were in distress. Professional lifeguards rushed to the scene and provided immediate assistance. Emergency medical teams also rushed on the scene. They were then transferred to the Costa del Sol Hospital for specialized care.

The incident took place on a day in which the sea state was not safe. Red flags were flying, even though it appeared that the water was calm. Authorities called on visitors and the general public to use extreme caution, and obey all safety signals to prevent accidents.

Fuengirola Lifeguard Service reminds beach-goers that everyone is responsible for their own safety. In adverse weather conditions, it is important to obey the warning signs as well as the flags that are colour-coded to ensure everyone’s safety.
