Man wanted by Ukraine held on arrival at airport

Police have arrested a 49-year-old man at Alicante-Elche Airport after he arrived on a flight from Bratislava and was found to be wanted by Ukrainian authorities over alleged arms trafficking offences.

The suspect was detained by Policía Nacional officers after checks against police databases confirmed that an international arrest warrant issued in August remained in force. Ukrainian authorities are said to be seeking him in connection with offences against public order and safety, and the illegal trafficking of weapons, ammunition and explosives.

According to the information released by police, the warrant carries a possible sentence of seven years in prison. Officers became aware that the man was travelling on the Bratislava flight and moved in once the plane had landed.

After police formalities were completed, he was handed over to the Central Investigating Court of the National Court, which will handle the extradition process to Ukraine.

The alleged offences date back to 2022 in the Zakarpattia region of western Ukraine. Police say the investigation linked him to the purchase of 60 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, which were later found and seized after being hidden among his belongings and transported in a car the following day.
