Mother goes on trial over alleged abuse of teenage daughter

A woman accused of forcing her 14-year-old daughter to have sex with her partner’s son has gone on trial in Alicante, with prosecutors seeking 18 years in prison for each defendant.

The alleged abuse dates back to between June and November 2019, when the girl was said to have been living at the home of the other defendant in Torrevieja while her mother visited once a week to bring food.

Prosecutors allege repeated violence

According to the indictment, the mother used those visits to pressure the teenager into sex with the 23-year-old man. Prosecutors also say both defendants beat the girl when she refused to comply.

The case is being heard by Section Seven of the Alicante Provincial Court, sitting in Elche, where the hearing was due to start at 9.30am on Monday.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office is charging the woman with sexual assault and habitual abuse. It is seeking the same sentence for the young man, whom it says was equally responsible for the offences.

The allegations have not been proven in court. Both defendants remain entitled to the presumption of innocence until the trial concludes.

Background to the case

The court will examine what happened during the months in question and whether the repeated visits to the Torrevieja home were used to maintain the alleged abuse. No verdict has been reported and the proceedings are ongoing.
