Government takes part in woman’s murder case

The Valencian regional government has authorised its legal service to join the court case over the killing and dismemberment of a woman in Benidorm, a move officials said reflects the public interest in violence against women.

The decision means the Generalitat Valenciana will act as a private prosecutor in the proceedings linked to the death of Meriane F. D. O., whose remains were found in burnt suitcases in the hills at Finestrat after she was reported killed in September.

Background to the case

According to the regional government, there is one man in provisional prison as the main suspect in the alleged attack. He is said to be the victim’s former partner.

Police believe two alleged accomplices helped him dispose of the body under coercion, according to their statements after reporting the crime. The investigation remains open.

The Generalitat said its intervention is based on regional equality and anti-violence laws, which allow it to take action in cases of fatal attacks on women, particularly where there is significant public concern.

The government added that it wants to reinforce institutional rejection of violence against women and support efforts to eradicate it.
