Policía Nacional at shipyard entrance after strike incident

Man held after car driven at strike picket

A man was arrested in Cartagena on Friday morning after his car was driven towards a group of striking metal workers near one of the accesses to Navantia, police said.

No injuries were reported in the incident, which happened around 9am on the La Algameca road as workers gathered at the site during the ongoing metal strike.

According to reports from the scene, the driver tried to force his way past the picket line at the entrance to the shipyard. The Policía Nacional then detained him on suspicion of a road safety offence.

The incident comes during a week of tense industrial action across the city, with access roads to Navantia among the main flashpoints.

The metalworkers’ strike has continued for several days as talks over the sector’s collective agreement remain blocked. The latest arrest adds to a series of incidents linked to the protests in and around the industrial estate.

Authorities have not released the driver’s identity or age, and it is not yet clear whether he has appeared before a judge.
